10 best goals of the season

It’s reached the end of the season folks and so I decided to pick my top goals of the season! After much deliberation what follows are ten goals, that I’m my own humble opinion have been the best.

So cue up the Lightning Seeds music (why don’t Match of the Day use that song anymore) and sit back and relive some top strikes English and European competition in 2008-09.

10 – Glen Johnson

Portsmouth 2-2 Hull (22 November 2008)

Johnson has had a great season for Pompey and England and this has to be one of his highlights. After Hull had cleared a Pompey corner, Johnson ran in caught the ball on the chest then volleyed the ball past the goalkeeper. As Andy Gray would say ‘You don’t save those!’.

9 Federico Mecheda

Man United 3-2 Aston Villa (5th April 2009)

What a way to make your debut eh! Deep into injury time United needed a winner and then 17 year-old Macheda picked up Giggs’ ball, turned Luke Young with a neat trick and curled the ball past Freidel. A new star was born and the title race swung back into United’s favour.

8 Steven Gerrard

Marseille 1-2 Liverpool (16 September 2008)

Another Stevie G classic. Dirk Kuyt passed the ball to the Liverpool skipper on the edge of the area and Stevie hit a first time shot that looped over the keeper’s head and into the net! The Marseille goalie didn’t even move.

7 Geovanni

Arsenal 1-2 Hull (27 September 2008))

A famous win for Hull was topped off by this wonderful goal from Geovanni! The samba star cut in from the left flank then unleashed a cracking shot from outside the area that whizzed past Almunia.

6 Frank Lampard

Hull 0-2 Chelsea (29 October 2008)

After a one-two with Florent Malouda broke down, the ball fell to Lampard on the corner of the box and with one clever little touch he chipped the ball over the helpless goalie Myhill. Very clever and instinctive from Mr Lampard.

5 Emmanuel Adebayor

Villarreal 1-1 Arsenal (7 April 2009)

A pinpoint pass from Fabregas was cleverly controlled on the chest by Adebayor, and then in one quick movement the big front-man produced an amazing bicycle kick. At that point he decided that would be his last contribution for Arsenal this season.

4 David Bentley

Arsenal 4-4 Spurs (29 October 2008)

An amazing goal in an amazing North London derby from an amazingly overrated footballer. Bentley was almost 40 yards out when he controlled the ball with one touch then hit a volley that went straight over Alumnia’s head and into the net! Done naff all since though.

3 Andres Iniesta

Chelsea 1-1 Barcelona (6 May 2009)

The timing, the importance of this strike cant be overstated but neither can the pure precision that the Spanish midfielder hit this wonderful goal. Short ball across thee edge of the box from Messi and then Iniesta smashed it in first time giving Cech no chance. Cue miserable looking Chelsea faces….

2 Fernando Torres

Liverpool 4-0 Blackburn (11 April 2009)

Fernando Torres amazing control and volley was absolute class and something only someone with his talent could produce.  A long ball down field from Jamie Carragher was picked up by Torres just inside the box, who then controlled it on his chest and then smashed a volley past Paul Robison from the most difficult of angles.

1 Eduardo

Arsenal 3-0 Burnley (8 March 2009)

This is one of the best bits of skill I’ve ever seen. Alex Song floated the ball in to Eduardo who hit a first time volley with the OUTSIDE of his left heel! Such an audacious bit of skill from a player who had been out for a year with a career threatening injury.

So there you go, no doubt there be some difference of opinions and I must give honourable mentions to Carlton Coles slick team goal against Wigan and thunderbolts from Koncheskey and Ronaldo.

Good shout on number 1, What a finish… I feel it didn’t get a quarter of the media attention that most of the other goals got!

it was shear class!! Hopefully he’ll play more next season.

I must admit, I actually thought that West Ham goal was the goal of the season, if it would been Man U everyone would have crapped their pants!

    3) Eduardo’s vs Burley
    4) RVP vs liverpool
    5) Vela’s chip vs Sheff United

  • Nick

Yeah I agree with most of those, but surely if you have Iniestas at 3, Essiens in the same game should be even higher? Maybe a little bit flukey but edge of the box, weak foot first time volley into the top corner, doesn’t get much better!

  • Patrick

I reckon Grafite’s goal vs Bayern deserves a mention if you include European Leagues and non-English teams. Also Ibrahimovich’s backheel vs Bologna was special. My favourite goal this season was Yoann Gourcuff vs PSG.

  • Patrick

Oh, and if you haven’t seen this, check out Nilmar’s goal for Internacional vs Corinthians

  • http://www.ukfootballfinder.co.uk Darren

class, reminds me Ibrahimovich’s goal for Ajax back in the day!

  • Arron

what about Cristiano Ronaldo vs Porto? thats better than the lot!

  • Ash

I did mention that at the end mate, but to be honest as good as Ronaldo’s goal was – all he did was whack the ball as hard as he could at the goal. True not many players could do it with the power and accuracy that he did but the ten I’ve chosen had more to them that IMO.
