Liverpool will win the Premier League

Liverpool fans have suffered from nineteen years of heartbreak without winning the league and this season the reds fans believe this drought will come to an end.

They’ve seen their fierce rivals Man Utd creep up and equal their record of being the champions of England and they will do anything they can to stop them overtaking them and that means securing the league this upcoming season.

At the start of every season the red half of Liverpool say that this will be the year that their team win the top prize and for 19 years they have been eating their words when the final whistle is blown on the Premiership, but in the lead up to this season, the belief is stronger than ever.
Finishing second last season is a boost for the team and they are determined not to go another season without bagging any silverware. Last season they had the added insult of seeing bitter rivals Man Utd winning the Premiership and reaching the Champions League final, Chelsea winning the FA Cup and neighbours Everton reaching the FA cup final.

The signing of Glen Johnson will give them much needed width. He was the best right back in the league last season and that was in a poor Portsmouth side, how good will he be in the Red of Liverpool? With Man City buying every player who shows any sign of moving, Rafa has said that he needs to sell before he can buy because of his restricted funds, but which players will he sacrifice?

So Liverpool fans are focusing on their current squad and with Torres saying that his future lies in Liverpool is a boost for the fans and the club. He has also said that he wants to become a legend at the club and be adored like Fowler and Dalglish and Liverpool fans, who are famously dubbed the teams ‘12th man’, would class him in the same league as them if he helps Liverpool win the title. But with Torres’ packed pre-season, it is a worry that he will be up to his usually high standard with such a short rest.

Only time will tell if Liverpool will win the title this season, but if the famous banner of a dedicated Liverpool fan of ‘Form is temporary but class is permanent’ is anything to go by then Liverpool should pick up some silverware this season.

Darren July 1, 2009 at 8:45 am: Going to have to totally agree with you Liz, they were very very close last season, if it wasn’t for Man U’s star player Howard Webb they would have been crowned Champions, Johnson is a cracking signing too, should give them extra pace and width, was was much needed.

Everyone kept moaning about them being boring (I was one) yet they scored and conceeded more goals then previous seasons yet only lost 2 league games.

dexylongshot July 1, 2009 at 8:48 am: I reckon they be higher than the Mancs this season unless Villa goes to old Trafford. Chelsea were a let down last season due to Big Phil loosing the dressing room. I fancy:

Darren July 1, 2009 at 8:55 am: I can’t believe I’m sticking up for them, I’m usually the first one to slag them off, but I seriously think this is the year. Thye played a quarter of the season without Torres and Gerrard yet still only lost 2 games.

Man U have lost 2 of their best players, Chelsea are prepared to pay 50 million for a 19 year old which stinks of desperation. Arsenal still need to sign that DF midfielder, Melo would have fitted the bill but has just signed a new contract at Fiontina.

If one of them goes, the title race could be anyones.
I think it will be a year of transition for Man Utd… and Chelsea need to strengthen too. Maybe Man City could buy the title this year?
Darren July 1, 2009 at 9:22 am: to early for City to buy the title, the players have to gel. I can’t see them winning 10 games on the spin. I think they will be very strong at home but will struggle away.
dexylongshot July 1, 2009 at 9:28 am: Way to early for city, as darren says, need time to gel and learn the lingo. Will probably have a good 2nd half, they will be a top 4 force in a couple of years though.

I think Hughes has bought sensibly so far- and if he gets Etoo or Tevez- then people will start to take notice.

Iain July 1, 2009 at 1:12 pm: Agree that if Liverpool keep their first XI fit for 75% of the season they are in with a massive shout. they need a reliable backup striker and right winger, though, cos if two of Torres, Gerrard and Kuyt are injured, they could struggle to score goals. Babel had a bad season, so he might be able to do the business

I reckon they’ll buy though. Have a sneaky suspicion that the title will go to the team that makes the best massive signing. If Liverpool get David Silva then it could well be their year. If Man Utd or Arsenal (ha! in my dreams) get Karim Benzema, that’ll be interesting. If Man City get Eto’o they will be a handful. God knows what Chelsea will do.

Of course all this assumes no more big departures, which could change everything.

I also think Yossi will play a bigger part this year, he was on fire in the last few months.

Jay29ers July 1, 2009 at 8:12 pm: Signing David Silva would probably be enough. Only thing is, they won’t. I would dearly love Liverpool to get their record back but I think it’ll be taken by United outright. Valencia’s not that great a signing but there’ll be more to come.

For Liverpool? They need to sell before they can buy another player so if they manage to get second that would be an achievement. Depressing.

Jay29ers July 1, 2009 at 10:34 pm: Well they have got cash burning a hole in their pocket. And time’s ticking away to rebuild for next season. Scholes? Giggs? Lots of players that need replacing long-term.

But anyway, back to Liverpool. I think the Glen Johnson signing is a good one but we need another striker and maybe a left winger. We also need strengh in depth in the squad but we simply don’t have the money to do that.

I think the money we do have might be best being invested in scouting and youth development. The days when we used to pick up Scotland’s best for close to no money are long gone but I bet there are still some great young players around the UK and Europe that can be brought in and cultivated. Look at Welbeck and Macheda! Liverpool did make it to the FA Youth Cup Final but were totally outclassed and the players that come through don’t make the grade anymore.
