World Cup countdown – The Ultimate French 11’s

In the famous words of Alan Partridge the French spend all their time chomping on onions going he hor, he hor, he hor! This of course, is not true, as a European footballing nation only the Italians and the Germans have a better record. Jealous? We sure are.

For those of you who were to young to remember, the French had a sensational side in the 80′s winning the European Championship in 1984 and reaching the World Cup Semi’s in 1982, before the Germans cheated their way to the final. They were pretty good in the early noughties too winning the World Cup in 2002 and Euro’s in 2000. Most of that team are still playing today with 22,070 caps between them.

Do you really know your clubs proud history or are you just a teenage glory hunter? (not mentioning any names from the Kings Road & Eastlands). dexylongshot November 16, 2009 at 12:34 pm: That should be French Mustard, you know, the cr*ap mild stuff. I’m gutted about Saturday, A fluky French deflected goal. Not over yet thou, let’s hope Dumbenech has a brain-storm and leaves out Henri and Anelka.

Iain November 17, 2009 at 11:26 am: Wouldn’t change much of that. I’d start Deschamps instead of Makelele (hes a world cup winning captain) but that back 4 is still to this day one of the best ever IMO.

Up front, why do we forget about Eric Cantona? Sure, the team would be squabbling, but I’d enjoy watching. Also always had a soft spot for Dugarry.

Yourri Djorkaeff would get in ahead of Pires for me, and if Giresse is in there, why not find some room for Tigana?

And poor old David Ginola. Not a chance of getting near the team, even with that hair.

Makele and Deschamps was very close as well. Old Yourri, is still playing, he was quality! Pires would have have got more caps if he wasn’t left on the bench due to being a Scorpio, honestly, how gutted would you be being lft out because you wasn’t born 4 weeks later!

Darren November 17, 2009 at 7:47 pm: our Ultimates 11′s are players from our (1970 onwards) generation, I think Fontaine scored 50 goals in 34 games, if it was an all time 11 then of course he’d be in that team
Darren November 17, 2009 at 7:48 pm: and PS: Teflon, are you mad? Platini was class! 9 goals in Euro 84′. He along with Glenn Hoddle was my hero, I know Hoddle played for the Spuds but he was class, he should have been as successful as Platini but the FA bottled it and pick donkey kongs instead

Darren November 18, 2009 at 6:32 pm: Ginola was class but was somewhat of a villan after he refused to keep the ball in the corner, the opposition went down the other end and scored and France failed to qualify for the World Cup, think it was israel if my memory serves me well. He never played for France again
