Can Chelsea pair get it right?

To make people think about how potentially frightening Chelsea FC will be in future years, I want to start by claiming that Fernando Torres, for me, joins the club as not only the second finest striker in world football but also the second best striker at Chelsea Football Club. Think about it….

If (and its a big IF) Torres quickly forms a partnership with Didier Drogba, we could have one the most deadly strike partnerships of all time on our hands. The reason I say its a massive ‘if’ is that both players are undoubtedly suited to playing up top as a lone man, or at least that’s when we’ve seen them at their very best. For me, Andy Cole/Dwight Yorke and Alan Shearer/Chris Sutton to this day have formed the most deadly partnerships n Premiership history. I’m lucky enough to have seen both pairs playing for Blackburn Rovers although in Andy and Dwight’s time together at Ewood, I’m 80% certain they were performing under the influence of Dwight’s Trinidadian-imported class-A powders!…On a serious note, Andy Cole was fantastic and an all-time hero of mine…playing alongside Matt Jansen, not Dangerous Dwight!

As hard as I might try, I can’t defend anybody for spending £50million on a footballer. However if mega-cash is going to be thrown around, it has to be for the very best. In this case, it absolutely has been and you could be forgiven for claiming that both clubs have got a good deal out of this particular transfer.

The next point I want to make is one that I refuse to spend much time on as it quite literally makes my blood boil. I just mentioned ‘top dollar for the best’…Liverpool cash in- heroes. What happens next is beyond me. I’ve had a rant regarding Liverpool’s pursuit of Blackpool midfielder Charlie Adam, and if the Andy Carroll transfer didn’t make me so physically ill, I’d have an even longer one today! Liverpool- zero’s!

Anybody who pipes up at the end of the season when Carroll’s notched up ten more goals and had a decent enough season and says “What were you talking about?”, you’re missing the point. The situation is not dissimilar to that of Charlie’s. Both are decent enough players, both got their international calls, both had exceptional Championship seasons last year, both started well this year, both remain unproven at Premiership level and both NOT worth the money that has either been mentioned, or in Carroll’s case, spent! If Carroll’s worth £35million, I’m worth £12million. Those who’ve played with me, am I being slightly harsh on myself there?…Okay, but 14mill- absolute tops!

In Torres, Chelsea have a great. For every club he’s played for, he’s been top man- until now. It remains to be seen how Carlo Ancelotti will fit both he and Drogba into a title-winning formula. One thing’s for sure though, if both players click , you don’t want to miss a minute!

Villa, van Persie, Berbatov, Zlatan, Forlan, Higuain, Suarez.

I’m not saying all of these are better than Torres or Drogba, but they’re in with a shout. And Drogba has one season left at the top – maybe this current one.

Unconvincing on Sunday was Fernando. Will be hilarious if he completely fails and is sold off to Spain in two years
