Chelsea to push through move for Madrid striker? Not a chance

The Express have reported that Jose Mourinho may raid his former employers Real Madrid to strengthen his Chelsea side. Apparently a report in Portuguese paper A Bola suggests that Karim Benzema could well be on his way in January. Chelsea have found goals difficult to come by from their strikers so far this season with their most prolific out on loan at Everton.

This story is extremely hard to believe for many reasons. Firstly Chelsea only play one out and out striker up front in their formation, so there isn’t a great need to have an abundance of them in the squad. Secondly they already have a fair few options for the role. Demba Ba was only brought in at the start of the year and hasn’t really been given a fair chance by the manager yet. He has shown he can score goals at that level with Newcastle and West Ham, and was stopped from going out on loan to Arsenal, so you would think he will be given a few starts. Fernando Torres has been in the news for his red card against Tottenham and then went on to get injured against Steaua Bucharest on Tuesday. Even so after his short lay-off you would expect him to come back into the side. Whilst he is not the same player that once starred for Liverpool and Spain he is still capable of scoring a lot of goals; he managed 22 last season. After Anzhi Makhachkala’s financial collapse Samuel Eto’o was reunited with Jose Mourinho after playing under him at Inter Milan giving Chelsea another option up front. Despite coming towards the end of his career Eto’o can still be used to great effect.

Jose Mourinho made the decision to allow Romelu Lukaku to go out on loan to Everton for the season following his successful campaign at West Brom last year. In that season Lukaku outscored all of his Chelsea teammates and could well do that again after a promising start for the Toffees. The 20-year-old Belgian striker was signed for a fee of potentially £20 million in August 2011 but has been used sparingly since. His talent was apparent to all last season, he is such a strong powerful striker and seems the natural successor to Didier Drogba. The signing of Karim Benzema would demote Lukaku even further down the pecking order which would be hugely unfair. Surely Mourinho will want his current strikers to find their form instead of splurging out on another?

Finally, Madrid themselves don’t really have a lot of strikers, and therefore would be silly to let Karim Benzema go. Whilst they have a lot of goals in their attackers; Ronaldo, Bale, and Isco, Benzema remains their only really senior striker. Alvaro Morata has featured a few times this season but they are unlikely to let him lead the line for the rest of the campaign. Selling Gonzalo Higuain to Napoli left them a bit short so I cant see them selling another striker before bringing in a couple. After spending a world record transfer fee on Bale, it would be unlikely if they were to spend another high amount to secure a top striker. Therefore take this rumour from a Portuguese paper with a pinch of salt, as I think it is a poor piece of journalism, purely linking a player with his former manager. I’ll eat my hat if it goes through.
