Eduardo and John Lennon – Overrated?

Business as usual for the Germans

So we are a weekend in to Euro 2008 and as yet no surprise, and not even a surprise goal from an underdog. Is this the route the tournament will take? Its looking like a feast of football is upon us if Germany v Poland is anything to go by, and whilst I am deeply upset by our failure to qualify it does make it somewhat easier to just sit back and enjoy the quality.Group BMy pre-tournament tips Germany already look strong, and I think any team that beats them in the knock out stages will be the eventual winner. In Lahm they have the best full back in Europe right now, and once again Podolski looks like the man to score the goals. With Ballack and Frings holding midfield they will be very difficult to stop. But can we expect any surprises at all, or will the predictability of the opening 4 games be set the standard?Well UEFA have done what they can to make it interesting, firstly by seeding the two weakest teams in the competition, and then by their ludicrous tennis style draw meaning that teams from the same group could contest a semi before playing a team from 2 of the other groups. So in the top half of the draw can anyone really see anything but a Germany Portugal semi? In Group A the Czechs will have a say, and they if anyone could spoil that party, but they are half the team they were even 2 years ago and it will take a monumental effort to make the semi, though they will waltz out of the group in second place.Group AIn B, all the talk is of Croatia. The English are a funny bunch. Because Croatia beat us in qualifying, the media have to make them out to be the dark horses who can go on and win it. They’re not. They are a decent international side who will capitulate as soon as they meet someone of real quality. And damn you Martin Taylor for giving the press an excuse when they go out. Like John Lennon went, in the pull of a trigger, from annoying hippy responsible for Imagine and Woman to the greatest ever Englishman, in one mistimed tackle Eduardo went from promising youngster only getting a game for his club because a Dutchman was injured to the sole reason why Croatia won’t win the tournament. English press and fans – get over it. Just because we were rubbish it doesn’t mean those who beat us were the best. See also Russia!Lennon & EdurdoThe ludicrous Group C sees 3 of the favourites playing each other so the Swiss and the Austrians get more of a chance. Tight to call but as ever I predict that the Dutch will miss out, having played some superb football. And in D the Spanish will walk it, promising their usual false dawn, only to play France or Italy in the quarters and go out after extra time and maybe penalties. History has taught us much, but little more dependable than the fact that the Spanish will be brilliant in their group then bottle the knock out stage. I predict they will bring Sweden with them, who will grind out bore draws with everyone and nip past Greece on a toss of a coin – never will a group have seen more 0-0’s than this one!The semis will see Germany soak up pressure from the Portuguese, and hit them on the break, with it all ending in tears for Cristiano after extra time. Italy and France will play out the other semi, and whoever lost in the group stage will win this time. Then Germany will lift the trophy. No real surprises there then. But then who called the Greeks, led by a Leicester old boy, doing what they did 4 years ago?!Its going to be a great couple of weeks, and even more so because the part time England fans will be too busy watching Big Brother to annoy us. The albino guy will win by the way…..

Im about the only one who doesnt expect Germany to go all the way. I think they will come unstuck as soon as they face a half-decent team. I think Croatia will beat them in the group stages too.

I also really fancy Romania in Group C. The likes of Chivu, Dica, Mutu and Rat look very useful. I did tip Holland but with a number of injuries i think they may struggle a little, unless Robben and Van Persie come back soon.

Im also quite happy that the tournaments a bit predictable at the moment. You want to see the big teams in the later rounds. Like the Portsmouth-Cardiff FA cup final. Nice idea but a bit dull.

I reckon overall one of Spain and Russia will win the whole thing.

    As title suggests…

I have been saying all season Eduardo is overrated. Dont get me wrong he is fantastic i the 6 yard box, but outside the 18 yard box he is non existent. I’ve seen him lots this year and been very disappointed most times i saw him.

  • Matt Quinn

I agree about Eduardo. He scored a few goals around Xmas/new year but that was about it. He seemed very overrated but can be useful in a team like Arsenal. I still think Croatia will have a good tournament irrespective of Eduardo’s absence.

  • http://www.ukfootballfinder.co.uk Darren

You can never bet against the Germans, they looked strong and in Poldoski, Gomez (he can’t be German with a name like that) & Klose they have tremendous attacking ability. Fritz & Frings were running things in the middle of the park too.

Croatia were an embarrassment, how on earth did they pi** our group? Or maybe it shows how crap we really are! A team should never peak to early but that performance was shocking. I fully expect them to get knocked out by the Germans in the next stage.

On a positive note for England, they did get to the final of BBC alternative Euro 2008 yesterday, but surprise surprise they lost on Penalties to Turkey

  • http://www.ukfootballfinder.co.uk Darren

I totally disagree Telfon, Eduardo is quality, he has quick feet and could of been the difference in the latter stages of the season. Look at the Everton game, 1-0 down, not in it but out of nothing he scored two well taken goals, he’s a great finisher and was starting to show his worth.

It shows how good he is as Croatia are crap without him! FACT

  • dexy longshot

i agree, Eduardo is quality and i would have fancied them for a decent run with him in. They looked average yesterday. I agree with Romania upset call too, the more i look at the team and the possibility of everyone in that group taking points of each other, that might sneak, Mutu is now one of top players in Europe and fancy a few goals from them. I’m gonna have some dough on them to get out of the group.

  • Martin Tibbetts

Redardless of how good Eduardo is, and I stand by my comments above on that one, he needs service to score goals, and this team don’t look like providing it to anyone up front. Its one thing banging them in against the mediocrity we had in our qualifying group, its quite another doing it against the likes of the Germans, the Czechs and the Portuguese. They will come through their group, because the other two teams are poor, but that’ll be them…

  • http://www.ukfootballfinder.co.uk Darren

For once I totally agree with Martin, Croatia have no flair what so ever, and what happened to Modric being the European Messi? It’s early days and any team would rather start badly then peak in the later stages, the fact is they were woeful but can only get better.

Mind you, take note, Italy didn’t win a single game at the group stages in 1982, yet they still won the World Cup!

I would love to see Romania win the whole thing.

I thought Pogatetz (SP) looked class yesterday, Beckham at his peak would have been proud of some of those cross field 40 yarders!!

  • http://n/a Aslan

Like I said previously the Germans will be the dark horses of this tournament and exceed all expectations of them and surprise everyone by lifting the trophy in a months time. Croatia aren’t all bad though…..They’ll notch up a few surprises…Mark my words !

  • http://www.ukfootballfinder.co.uk Darren

we should start a new column, Aslans crappy prediction column where he states the obvious

  • Matt Quinn

Why the Germans? This victory was their first in European finals since 1996. The last two tournaments you could have safely written them off! Its a tired cliche and their squad is just totally uninspiring.

  • dexylongshot

They looked great going forward and will get plenty of goals due to their easy route but i’d like to see them come up against a decent front-line. Lahm gets forward brilliantly but but leaves plenty of space behind and the 2 Metz’s in the center back spots would struggle against a team like Spain which I reckon might be the final.

  • http://www.ukfootballfinder.co.uk Darren

that was a joy to watch tonight, beautiful counter attacking football, when was the time last England scored a goal like that? Back in 66 when Sir Alf Ramsey invented the 4-4-2?

The Dutch had class, lets hope they haven’t peaked to early. Like Argentina 2006!

  • Martin Tibbetts

Absolutely, the first shock of the tournament. We expected the Dutch to be decent, but no-one could surely see the Italians being that bad! Until Grosso and Del Piero came on they had no invention whatsoever and were swept aside. Still, write them off at your peril, they are always the slowest of starters and the earlier result still leaves it wide open….

  • http://www.ukfootballfinder.co.uk Darren

Watching Italy was like watching England, no pace, one dimensional with absolutely no flair or cutting edge. The same was said during the World Cup yet they still won it, so you’re right Tibbs, never write them off, although this surely has to be the toughest group of all time, if a Czech, Austria or a Turkey were in the group then I could see them getting out, but I can’t see Italy beating both France & Romania, which is what is needed.

As Aslan would say, Holland are dark horses, mark my words!

  • Matt Quinn

I always thought Holland would get through that group. Considering Van Persie and Robben were injured they have the best attacking choices in the tournament. Van Persie, Robben, Van Der Vaart, Sneijder, Van Nistelrooy, Huntelaar, Afellaay and even Kuyt.

I didnt think Italy were that bad though and were quite unlucky to lose by that amount. Both of Hollands counter-attack goals came after Italy were a whisker away from scoring themselves. Holland were the better team, but Italy werent too far behind and had enough chances throughout the game.

Interestingly, just read that Van Nistelrooys goal was perfectly legitimate as even though Panucci was off the pitch, he is still, by law, considered active.

  • Mike

Panucci was in fact active as he didn’t have permission to leave the pitch, hence why the goal stood. We all remember Italy’s fortuitous penalty against Australia in WC 2006 so it’s swings and round abouts.

We all know Holland will not win Euro 2008, so lets just enjoy the journey while it lasts

  • http://n/a Aslan

hmmm…..using eduardo’s name in the same sentance as john lennon is an insult to the centre forward !

  • http://n/a Aslan

Also…..i said germany were dark horses….nobody said anything pre-tournament about germany being one of the favorites….bet none of you had em down on your betting slips….especially not you Darren and i believe all of you lot probably bet against them if anything !!!….like all man united fans i know good football when i see it…and yes Holland did play well and for once i agree with Darren about them standing a big chance…. My 2 teams for this tournament are germany and holland. if neither win the tournament i’d be glad to take wet sponges launched at my face from everyone in this blog in person and it be recorded and uploaded to this blog. thats how confident i am of germany or holland winning !! MARK MY WORDS …. !

  • http://www.ukfootballfinder.co.uk Darren

    what?

  • http://www.ukfootballfinder.co.uk Darren

erh, lets look at the facts here, Germany have won the World Cup 3 times (1954, 1974 & 1990),
    they have been runners up on 4 occasions (1966, 1982, 1986 & 2002)

    Germany have won the European Championship 3 times, (1972, 1980 & 1996) Runners up in (1976 & 1992)

Since their penalty shootout loss to Czechoslovakia in Euro 76, Germany has not lost a penalty shootout in major international tournaments. In fact, the last penalty missed by a German player dates back to the semi-finals of the 1982 world cup when French goalkeeper Jean-Luc Ettori saved Uli Stielike’s shot.

Thats the obvious reasons why everyone including myself makes the Germans favourites, only Brazil can boast a record as impressive. They know how to prepare for tournament football and always have.

Dark horses Germany & Holland? Mark my words, I don’t think you know your international football do u?

  • Martin Tibbetts

See Spain are right on track. Usual story, get everybody wetting themselves in the group stage, then out with a whimper before the final. Its in their genes. Good to see the Greeks get beat, all that passing across the back line at 0-0 was an isult to the travelling fans.

And Germany as dark horses? Come on, I am with Darren here. They were the bookies favourite pre tournament, were outstanding at the last world cup and I would argue are the best team at the competition by a mile…and I had a few bob on them before the kick off, just didn’t shout about it!

  • Dexylongshot

    In reply to Aslans;
nobody said anything pre-tournament about germany being one of the favourites….bet none of you had em down on your betting slips

Dexy wrote about Germany, in the Group B blog.

“This form leaves me in no doubt that this tournament could be the one when he (Ballack) finally gets the chance to lift the cup.”

Spain v Germnay final for moi.

  • http://www.ukfootballfinder.co.uk Darren

I’ve been following this tournament since 1984 when Spain got to the final and lost to France.

France were by far the best team in the comp, Platini scored 9 goals in the tournament, including 2 hat tricks.

Spain always do this, so don’t get to excited, they won it in 1964 as hosts. So the odds of them winning are slim, forget that 4-1, they will be knocked out when they face a side with a stingy defence, Germany for example, mark my words!!

  • dexylongshot

    spain v germany finay. MMW….LOL:)

WHere’s that manc maddy bird gone????
    She sounded well dappy!

  • http://www.ukfootballfinder.co.uk Darren

who would have thought that then? Germany beaten by a very average team.

It just goes to show, judge a team one game at a time. Croatia were superb and looked good enough to win the tournament, Germany on the other hand were very poor. Gomez and Klose didn’t get a sniff.

    Croatia dark horses, MMW!!

  • Matt Quinn

As i wrote a few days ago…. why is everyone backing Germany? Individually they are poor. If Villa signed anyone other than Ballack i would be very non-plussed.
Take individually against Croatia. I rate so many more croats…
    Ballack v Krancjar
    Frings v Modric
    Lahm v Corluka
    Fritz v Srna

I would take each and every croat over the Germans.

  • http://www.ukfootballfinder.co.uk Darren

Matt, please read my previous comments

look at the facts here, Germany have won the World Cup 3 times (1954, 1974 & 1990),

The term never write them off was invented by the Germans.

Would you like a wager that they get to the final??

  • http://www.ukfootballfinder.co.uk Darren

ps: and talk about fickle, everyone was banging on about how bad the Croatians were, 1 very good win and all of sudden they are favourites and Germany are crap.

  • Matt Quinn

I wasnt fickle. Read my posts on this article. I quote… “I think Croatia will beat Germany in the group stages”.

The difference is that in the past Germany have had excellent players. For the last 10 years they havent. The Germans win against Poland was their first Euro finals win since 1996. They got to the final in 2002 World Cup with the easiest run ever. As soon as they face a semi-decent team in recent years, theyve lost.

They have excellent pedigree because they had excellent players. At the moment, they dont. This myth of never write the Germans off is rubbish.

  • http://www.ukfootballfinder.co.uk Darren

coming from someone is off to see ‘The Sound of Music’ tonight with his GF & mum instead of watching France v Holland says it all.

Germany never have world class players as the German league is pretty weak. But as a collective they always perform. I don’t like the way play, but YOU cannot deny they always do well in tournaments, thats why they are still my favourites.

The Sound of Music, never write it off!!

  • Matt Quinn

Beckenbauer, Klinsmann, Mattheus, Brehme, Voeller, Muller, Ruminiger and Pierre Litbarski. Theyve always had world class players! They seem to have stopped producing them now tho.

At least the Sound of Music is Euro 2008 themed. It was filmed in Salzburg, you know, a venue for some of the group games.

  • Martin Tibbetts

Podolski, Ballack, Lahm – there’s three world class players for you right away. They will win against Austria, beat Portugal in the quarter and then see off Croatia in the semi. They always wobble a bit in the group.

By the way, Litbarski!! World class mullet but hardly Gerd Muller!!

And don’t knock the Sound Of Music, one of the greatest films ever made. can’t see the Austrians standing up to Germany the way our heroes do in that though….

  • http://www.ukfootballfinder.co.uk Darren

ah yes, the German side of 1982. The semi final against France was one of the best games I have ever seen. France were 3-1 up, with goals from Platini, Trésor and Giresse. But the Germans came back, Littbarski, Rummenigge and Fischer the scorers. They won on pens, that’s one of the reasons why you never write them off. That was also the game when Harold Schumaker should have been banned for life for his horrendous tackle on Patrick Battison.

I think you will also find that the Germans formally know as West Germany lost a group game to Algeria, which at the time was an even bigger shock then losing to Croatia. So the reasons for not writing them off are for every one to see.

World Cup 2002, no one gave them a chance, the German press said the were the worst German side of all time, yet they still made the semi finals.

So that my friends, is why the Germans will always be a force.

I’m a not a German fan, I’ve just been following International football since 1982 and they are by far the most reliable team of my generation.

As for Salzburg and ‘The Sound of Music’, yes I’ve been there, beautiful part of the country. Are Matt & Martin going together?

  • lucaT83

Italy are all over Romania, Luca for top goalscorer

  • matt quinn

Martin. I agree Ballack is world class but Podolski!?!?!? He played about 5 times for Bayern Munich last season and is looking to move as he cant get a game. He also wasnt a guaranteed starter for Germany at these Euros having been shunted out to midfield to accomodate Klose and Gomez.
I like Lahm but think he is living off one cracking goal at the last world cup. Ian Harte used to score similar goals tho.

All im saying is that people in the past couldnt write off Germany as they had good players. The last 10yrs they havent and thus im writing them off.

  • http://www.ukfootballfinder.co.uk Darren

Pololski is one of those players that come to life at tournaments. Wayne Rooney Euro 2004 is a classic example, what has he done in an England shirt since?

If you are talking of full backs living living off one goal then Stephen Carr is another example, he scored that 30 yarder against Man United and has been crap ever since.

Did u see the Ducth last night? Football heaven, what a joy to watch, Van Persies goal was superb, but Robben’s was simply world class, Chelsea be gutted letting him go, they haven’t replaced him.

How was the show? Did u dance and skip?

  • matt quinn

I saw the highlights of Hollandv France. France seemed to have a lot of chances!- but with Robben and Van Persie on the bench Holland always had attacking options.
Did you see Spain? Not at their best, but it just shows. You cant write the Spanish off.
The show was really good. Really enjoyed it and i dont like musicals.

Ps. Stop slaggin Rooney off. Hes the only player England has with a football brain. Goals arent everything. He plays the same way for Man Utd- not loads of goals but great for the team.

  • BigpHil2Nd

Spain were very, very poor, if you can win and play badly then they must be in with a shout.

Villa & Torres, Chelsea bound (ha ha)!

Rooney hasn’t played well in an England for years, he looks like he can’t be arsed with it

  • Aslan

torres for Chelsea? Now u know what u mean when I say Chelsea fans are living in a dream world which is very brown and can be found inside their own bottoms !!
