Given a great signing for Villa

It was reported over the weekend that Aston Villa are close to signing Manchester City goalkeeper Shay Given and this is an excellent move for both the club and the player.

Given was left warming the bench at Eastlands last season with Joe Hart – the man who also occupies the No.1 England Goalkeeper Kit at present – picked ahead of him for the entire campaign.

This would have been extremely frustrating for a player as good as Given and it is right that he is moving on this summer. Manchester City enjoyed one of their most successful ever seasons last year and Given would love to be part of similar success as a No.1 elsewhere.

As mentioned, Villa Park appears to be his destination and this is a good move for the Republic of Ireland international. He will be playing regular first-team football at a massive club looking to have a successful season.

It is perhaps a shame that Given still hasn’t had the chance to play Champions League football, but if he wants to play at this stage of his career, he perhaps can’t wait for any of the big four to come calling.

As for Villa, they have to be happy with themselves if this deal goes through. They have replaced 40-year-old Brad Friedel with 35-year-old Given and have themselves a keeper who is equally as talented.

The former Newcastle United keeper has a massive amount of experience too, so he will add a lot to Alex McLeish’s Villa squad. He will more than likely settle in straight away and become a fans favourite before long.

A far as how close the deal is, many expect it to go through this week for around £3.5m. This is a good deal for Villa. Top-class goalkeepers are not too easy to come by and they have one who is proven at this level in their sights.

Given will have lots of hunger too. Some players at 35-years-old will be starting to wind down having enjoyed the best days of their career.

However, Given will want to prove he is still one of the best keepers in the country and continue his quest to play Champions League football one day with Villa.

The transfer news hasn’t all been positive as far as Aston Villa are concerned this summer with Ashley Young move to Manchester United and Stewart Downing on the way out, but with the signing of Given they arguably have one of the bargains of the summer.
