Time for change

Chelsea take on the mighty CFR Cluj from Romania tonight for a place in the Champions League knock out stages. Baring the biggest shock in the history, Chelsea along with the usual suspects will have once again qualified for a competition that doesn’t really start until the lesser teams are knocked out. It’s becoming rather predictable and a tad boring if I’m honest with you.

99 % of us had never heard of CFR Cluj when the draw was made, ok, my Matt Oleg who supports CSK Sofia probably has. CFR are already out and playing for nothing more then pride and a chance to put themselves in the shop window.

The group stages have been rather embarrassing with the gulf growing bigger year by year. With whipping boys such as BATE, AaB & CFR 1907 Cluj simply providing canon fodder for the big boys.

My point here is you better get used to it. Michel Platini plans to expand the Champions League with more teams from the smaller countries. Great news for the Champions of Luxemburg, Estonia & San Marino et al. Bad news for everyone else with more mismatches, empty stadiums and fringe players making appearances.

If ever the so-called ‘Champions’ League needs to be re-branded it’s now.

If Platini is not careful the CL will end up like the UEFA cup, which less face it, is even more of a joke then the Coca Coca Cup.

There are to many games already, the competition needs to revert back to the knock out stages as it used to be. This would obviously upset the sponsors and TV companies who want to line their greedy pockets with as much money as possible. Problem being, if it continues in this vein attendances will drop anyway then everyone will lose out.

So come on Platini, get your head out of your ass and get real. It’s not called The Champions League for nothing!!

i’ve missed quite a few CL games this season cos as you’re right, it’s no longer exciting. There’s one good game in 10.

As if Chelsea are going to lose to Cluj, I hope they do but it aint gonna happen.

They should revamp both comps and bring back the cup winners cup, champions only then the next 3 go into the UEFA, and ditch those stupid pointless leagues where the top 3 or 4 go through. The cup winners should go into the Cup Winners cup.

    Nuff said

Champions League? Be bloody grateful you’re in it! We’ll be playing Championship football next season, standing there for 2 hours freezing me nuts off for that rubbish, no closing down, no creativity, no pace, nothing. We made the Spuds look good!

I’m already looking forward to me weekend away to Blackpool next year

it should be reverted to a straight knock out system with no seeding so the so called “big boys” miss each other until the later rounds.

if its the champions league then why are asrenal, liverpool and chelsea in it??? its so that uefa can keep all the big teams happy because of the impending threat of a break away european league.

Is it sad that I prefer to watch non-league and lower league football nowadays?

Its sad that the european cup has become a marketing tool for uefa and all the major football teams. the magic has gone.

lots of people feel the same, with rising ticket prices etc…. Non league football is the way forward. I’m looking forward to the biggest derby in football history when AFC Wimbledon play MK Dons.

I’m actually playing tennis tonight, I can’t be arsed to watch Arsenal reserve team play Porto. There’s something missing the comp. As you rightly point out, the European cup has become a huge marketing tool so brands can exploit and make vast amounts of cash. I mean what the hell has Ford got to do with football?

    The full lowdown……

personally id prefer it to go back to a straight knock out, FA cup style, but it wont happen cos theres too much money involved, Since its inception Man Utd, Liverpool, Chelsea and Arsenal have made £662m between them solely through this one competition ……….although one way ive found to make the competition more fun…bet on it.

    Darren Says:

“I’m actually playing tennis tonight, I can’t be arsed to watch Arsenal reserve team play Porto”

    Darren Arsenal are playing tomorrow!

    “with rising ticket prices etc”

It’s actually cheaper to watch Arsenal in Champions League than the FA cup and Premiership!

Oh yeah, wicked, I’ll be watching it then!

I get a bit confused sometimes.

it must be said, you are a first class muppet Darren, falling asleep at your desk dribbling…

So in the end it’s 2-1 to Chelsea and Cluj gave them a run for their money. I think that pretty much proves so-called minnow clubs deserve their place in the current format of the Champions League.

Platini will never change the format to favour the big clubs – he’s already made it very clear he favours a more even playing field that awards just as many places to lesser-known leagues at the expense of Premiership, La Liga and Serie A.

I think there’s a lot to be said for mixing the big boys in with the lesser known clubs. The potential for an upset is real and present, and it’s the only way for clubs of these leagues to have a chance to develop and get some much-needed revenue from big games and TV fees. On the other side, big clubs can use the games to give younger squad members a run-out and a chance to shine once the heat’s off and they’ve already qualified, while still giving them experience of a big-stage event.

It’s never easy to accept that 3 points for a win at this time of year only counts towards tournament progression rather than visible success, but that’s the way it’s been and I like the format.

Cluj won in Rome, so they can’t be that shite can they?

Although it’s good for the little countries to have to go and we may get the odd upset, like International football when Luxumberg won in Switzerland for example, their first win EVER in world cup history, only took 30 years.

The CL will just become a European version of the Coco Cola cup. But I’m a Gooner, and all we do is moan.

    Christmas is shit
