Xabi Alonso has revealed that Real Madrid team-mate Cristiano Ronaldo has still not returned to training ahead of Saturday’s crucial La Liga clash with Sporting Gijon.

Ronaldo picked up an ankle injury following a strong challenge by Luis Perea during last weekend’s ill-tempered derby win over city rivals Atletico Madrid.

The Portuguese is still expected to be available for the upcoming trip to Gijon, which is Madrid’s final outing in the league before their eagerly-awaited clash with Barcelona a week later, but Alonso has revealed that Real’s star man remains sidelined by the injury.

“He has not trained with the team, but hopefully he can get to the game against Gijon,” the Spain midfielder told Marca.

“Perea’s tackle was hard, but luckily it’s not as serious as it could have been.

“We accept that football is a contact sport, and that sometimes you receive bad tackles – and sometimes you make them. You just accept it.”

Alonso is pleased with the way in which Los Blancos are currently performing and is looking forward to welcoming the Catalans to the Santiago Bernabeu. However, he insists that Jose Mourinho’s men are not looking beyond this weekend’s fixture.

“I have great respect for Sporting Gijon,” the World Cup winner said. “These three points are as valuable as the three points [against] Barcelona.”

“I understand that journalism is about anticipation, but our perspective is different: first Gijon, then Amsterdam to face Ajax, and finally El Clasico.”

Madrid are currently on a 13-game winning streak and lead La Liga, three points ahead of Barcelona, having played one game less than the defending champions.
