The greatest performance in recent years?

Write Arsenal off at your peril is the message coming from Arsenal this morning.

The Gunners sensational victory in the San Siro was arguably the finest achievement in the knock out stages by an English team for some time.

Arsenal’s midfield prodigy Cesc Fabregas claims Arsenal are good enough to do a remarkable double, all this despite star player and former captain leaving the club in the summer. Thierry who?

Arsenal outclassed AC Milan 2-0 and in doing so became the first English team to win at the San Siro as they sent the holders crashing out of the Champions League. The defeat could also spell the end of Carlo Ancelotti and his ageing stars.

“We are top of the Premier League and through to the quarterfinals of the Champions League,” said Fabregas, 20.

“We beat the holders at home, so why can’t we win them both?”

Fabregas was once again the heartbeat as Arsenal outplayed Milan with a stunning performance, Arsenal were simply better in every department.

Emmanuel Adebayor said the win has restored confidence amongst his Arsenal teammates and believes people were too quick to write them off.

He stated: “Two weeks ago people were saying ‘they’re not going to win the title, they’ll be out of the Champions League’.

Arsene Wenger has always believed in his team when others have been quick to knock them down. When Henry left for Barca in the summer there was even talk that the Gunners would finish outside the top 4, how wrong they have been proved. In the face of adversity Arsenal seem to triumph.

Worrying for the rest of the Premier League and Europe is Arsenal are a team still learning. They will get better, and with a transfer budget of 70 million to spend in the summer Arsenal could be a major force in the coming years.

Makes Middlesbrough’s win the result of the season. Southgate for England!

It was simply mind blowing! I was in Milan and watched the game in the middle of 5000 other North Londoners… From where we sat and sang the San Siro could have easily been our home stadium! Fabregas and Hleb were outstanding and even Phillip Senderos could have competed for man of the Match! Kaka was out skilled and out played by Flamaini and Fabregas and everyone will now wonder if Arsenal can push on for their first Champions League win. Bring on Barcelona next round… I think the way Arsenal played they could take on anyone.

If we avoid our lot we have a great chance, even Barca aren’t all that. Would love to put one over them, with Henry in the side too!

I thought that Arsenal’s performance at AC Milan on Tuesday was the best performance by an English team in the Champions League since Manchester United’s victory over Juventus in Turin in 1999.

Milan are a team who rarely lose at home and have fantastic experience throughout the team – but Arsenal’s performance was an object lesson in how to play football in 2008.
