Is Wenger’s refusal to spend costing Arsenal?

Following Arsenal’s 1-0 defeat at home to Newcastle many fans have been left frustrated with the team’s weakness in certain positions.

The defeat which was a massive blow to the team considering Chelsea also lost meaning Arsenal lost the chance to close the gap on the current champions and league leaders.

Newcastle’s goal came from an error by keeper Lukasz Fabianski. Mistakes from the last line of their defence have become all too familiar for Arsenal’s die hard following.

It’s a well known fact within the game that Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger has a huge transfer kitty at his disposal but in the main refuses to spend due to the belief he has in his current squad.

The figure believed that Mr Wenger has at his deposal is around £40 million to spend on the playing staff.

Despite this in the last transfer window Wenger secured no high profile signings and added only Laurent Koscielny for around £10 million Sebastian Squillaci for around £5.3 million pounds and Marouane Chamakh on a free transfer.

On top of this Arsenal sold Eduardo to Shakhtar Donetsk for a figure in the region of £6 million, Fran Merida to Athletico Madrid for a fee that has not been announced as well as Sol Campbell, Mikael Silvestre and William Gallas both on free transfers.

Assuming Arsenal received around £3 million for Merida (training fees due to age I realise it was actually a free transfer) of Wenger’s £40 million war chest he has made a net spend of around £6 million and a significant cut in the wage bill.

Despite every fan and media pundit in the country crying out for Arsenal to sign a new Goalkeeper, Wenger refused to budge and stuck with his current crop of keepers.

It leads to the question: is Wenger’s belief in his squad and refusal to make major additions costing Arsenal the chances to win the top honours?

Should he go and spend big money in January to bring his squad as close to the levels of Chelsea’s as he possibly can.

Or are the Arsenal fans happy with boasting huge profits but not backing this up with any success on the pitch?

Is Wenger too stubborn in seeing out “his project” and is it time for a change in the Arsenal managerial hot seat?

Until the chelsea’s and man u’s next generation come through i don’t see any change..in winning silverware or spending big!

its not said much but we have to remember man u and chelsea are still playing with more or less the squads that had to compete against our invincibles! so your ashley coles..drogba’s..terrys…giggsys..scholes…ferdinand..van der sar…basically the players in around 30+ UNTIL they retire we aare going nowhere

now if wenger didn’t imput his over 30 policy we would still have ..at least for guidance like man u our Henry’s..vieira’s..gilberto silva’s…pires’s campbells

and then yes we would’ve had more of a chance

and i think wenger knows this NOW..but obviously doesn’t wanna let his pride and ego be distorted!

    just a thought

most definitely, everyone except Wenger knows we need a keeper, our bafoons have already cost us 6 points this season, and both of those games were at home to newly promoted sides.

I don’t care what he sees in training, during the match is when it counts and Flapinanski will NEVER be good enough!

  • http://www.ukfootballfinder.co.uk Mystical Mike

he is obsessed with what Barcelona have done, but he is forgetting one major difference between the two sides, Barca have spent, and spent big!

The annoying thing is we don’t need to spend big, 2 or 3 world class players and we can seriously win every trophy going!

  • ryan

Surely them 2 or 3 world class players would require spending big?

  • http://www.ukfootballfinder.co.uk Mystical Mike

depends, I reckon Maarten Stekelenburg would go for 10m.

I really like Cheik Tiote at Newcastle, I think they’ve quite possibly got the bargain of the season, he looks absolute class. He’d be perfect along side Cesc, and Nasri.

  • ryan

ha u say world class and then mention Tiote he may be good but world class he is certainly not. Think of the 3 world class players u say we need then add up their value stekelenburg would be the cheapest at 10ish million who are your other 2

  • http://www.ukfootballfinder.co.uk Mystical Mike

Bastian Schweinsteiger, getting on a bit, but been there done that. Would add steal to the midfield.

Philippe Mexés, been linked with him for years, not sure if he’s world class, but there’s 3 players that would turn Arsenal into contenders rather than also rans.

I reckon you’d get the lot for 25m!

  • Nathan

dn’t need a keeper seriously sczencsy is good enough trust me…he’s like a schmichael/casillas keeper!

  • http://www.ukfootballfinder.co.uk Mystical Mike

so why does he keep playing those 2 goons? They are costing us points!

  • ryan

Sczencsy is the problem Wenger loves the boy but is not sure he’s ready hes too scared of losing him to bring anyone in ahead of him.
I think mexes is too slow to add anything too our defence and even if schweinsteiger is on a free transfer it would still come to 25 million and theres many clubs looking at him i dont think we would be able to compete with the likes of chelsea city united and the milans and thats without mentioning the spanish teams

  • Barry

wenger is too loyal to average players like clichy , denilson djourou, almunia & fabianski
would have kicked them out long time ago

  • Nathan

so why does he keep playing those 2 goons? They are costing us points!
    ———————-
he does that becos he doesn’t wanna “hurt their feelings..give his players a chance…and protect them”

he’s such a panzy at times i can c why we get kicked off the park..and accused of being “boys”..well not so much now becoz we’ve been screaming this for ages now!

  • ryan

personally i think the problem is that wenger sees the levels these average players can produce at their best and expects it every week so still plays them. Clichy at his best is in the top 3 lb’s in the world but he is at his best about 4 times a season

    ——————-
    THATS SO TRU!

i dnt know why he does this..he must be scared he’ll hurt their feelings!

  • dasds

Thats the reason why thius club will not go into ADMINISTRATION. He keeps bringing talented players through. Where was DROGBA when he was 20-23. Where???. These guys we have cam compete(nearly) when they are 20-23. Imagine where will they be when they are 27

  • ryan

they will be playing for real madrid ha im joking i see your point this team can potentially be great but we said that 5 years ago. Also the drogba point is true which is why i lay off bendtner no target man is ever good until atleast 26ish they may be the odd ones out but thats the general rule

  • Nathan

These guys we have cam compete(nearly) when they are 20-23. Imagine where will they be when they are 27
    ————
yeah its tru..playing for barca or real madrid..or even chelsea

remember we are a selling club aswell!

but 5more years and yh we might of won something by then! lol

  • ryan

I think the label of selling club is a little bit harsh yes we have sold players but always at the right time who goes and betters themselves after arsenal i agree henry won stuff but he was no longer the player he was in his arsenal days the same can be said for viera

  • Nathan

    ——————-
then there should have been a clause in the contract to say if it goes belly up for them ..we can have em back for free

im sure flamini and helb would’ve liked that!lol

  • ryan

haha i think with the state there both in they would happily come and sit on our bench lol

  • Nathan

ryan mate what do you think of what cesc said:

“we all said after we’d lost at home to West Brom that we couldn’t afford any more setbacks like that – and yet we did it again”

if he was a fan i think he would be far from an “in arsene we trust-arselicking fan”.. i like how he see’s the frustrating things we do..i bet he even pose the question – “why no new keeper?”

and him wanting to leave i think was purely because he knew him putting all his passion and determination into us winning something would still not work because of our tight pocketed..lightweighted team..he ain no gerrard lol

  • http://www.ukfootballfinder.co.uk Mystical Mike

the problem is though, is when our younger players do reach 27 and they are world class, Barca, Real etc… will come knocking with big cheques and they will leave. It’s a catch 22 situation.

Do you really think Cesc likes playing with the likes of Eboue, Denilson when he can be playing with world class players like Messi & Co!!

We can’t keep saying when they are older they will ready as anything can happen, we might not finish in the top 4, what happens then?

  • ryan

Cesc loves wenger its the only reason he is still with us had wenger gone cesc would of made sure he got his move in the summer just gone.
he genuinly loves the club but he loves his home city more

  • Nathan

true – well stays or goes..its been fun lol

  • Nathan

    wilshere’s almost ready anyways

  • ryan

Wilshere is top notch ive never seen anyone at 18 play th way he does he just does no tlose the ball

  • Nathan

and he gets stuck in – i reckon he’s got a good perspective on what we need to do anyways..he sees our frustration trust me

i jus hope he don’t become like:

    “oh well..win loose or draw..im still gettin paid £50 000 a week!”

    god please no!

  • ryan

Wilshere will get a bad injury i fear…hes too whole hearted. at the moment he plays for the lov eof the game if he doesnt lose that theres no limit on how good he can be

  • Nathan

yh i can see him suffering a bad one too! ah well..theres always the likes of denilson lol

  • http://www.ukfootballfinder.co.uk Mystical Mike

if Wilshire can add goals to his game then we have a ready made replacement for Cesc, lets face it, he’ll be gone next Summer.

  • Nathan

yh i think he’s got goals in him already lol

    mouthwatering really

    ramsey wilshere

    song

    nice

    with nasri /arshavin chamakh/persie walcott/wellington

  • http://www.ukfootballfinder.co.uk Mystical Mike

footballing wise, its absolute class, but I do feel we’d need some steal in there, even Barca had Ya Ya and Sergio Busquets, their skillful players alone wouldn’t be enough

  • Marc Sibbons

Arsenal are always going to score goals. Offensively they are arguably the most creative and devastating in England, and maybe Europe. The problem area is definitely the defence and in particular the current crop of goalkeepers. Fabianski and Almunia might be decent shot stoppers, but they are also prone to mistakes and seem to be fearful of high balls into the box and controlling their box. They haven’t really executed the difficult task of replacing David Seaman in my view. Yeah Lehmann was part of the 49 game unbeaten run, but he wasn’t perfect by any means. Wenger needs to splash out on a decent keeper first and foremost (Pepe Reina mould for example) and stop believing Fabianski and Almunia are world beaters!

  • ryan

great display tonight bit lucky at the end but everyone needs luck. after us slagging him off all day fabianski pulls out the save of the season so far ha the irony

  • http://www.ukfootballfinder.co.uk Mystical Mike

two of those saves were world class, problem is, he is likely to drop a clanger in the next few games, it’s all about consistentacy.

Great win, a tough place to go, they were unlucky against Man U.

  • ryan

yeah great win hard place to visit if he can keep up that form then he is a candidate for a full time number 1 job
