Maiga deal back on!

On September 1, I was one of the many people on Tyneside who were fuming that Newcastle United had failed to bring in a replacement for the number 9 shirt vacated by Andy Carroll.

Newcastle could not be faltered in the lack of trying however, almost signing Mali international Modibo Maiga from Sochaux, but after negotiations broke down it would seem like Ba, Best and Ameobi would have to do.

Now a month and a half into the new season and with Newcastle still unbeaten and occupying fourth place it would seem signing a new striker has taken a back seat. But announcements from inside St James Park would indicate signing Maiga is back on and he would be joining the Toon Army after all in January.

Maiga who went on strike after the deal broke down in the summer refusing to train or play, has found form scoring four goals in six games for the French side this season. This gives more good news to Alan Pardew’s side Newcastle adding to the fantastic start they have already achieved.

But this is not the only good piece of news; the striker is now reportedly coming to Tyneside for £7m. This is a reduced fee from the money offered in the summer, which again already looks like another fantastic bargain for the North East side.

Though does Newcastle need to spend this money on bringing in a striker when the ones leading the line are playing so well? Well I believe so.

Ba while being in fantastic form this season for Newcastle scoring five goals in seven games, and when you add this to his West Ham total it takes his total to eleven goals in 14 games. And also his fellow striker Best who started in scintillating form his goals of late have seemed to of dried up.

Though these two are not exactly injury resistant, with Best suffering from injuries such as; cruciate ligament damage that forced him to miss a significant part of last seasons pre season and then an injury sustained in training in March before the Stoke forcing him to miss the rest of the season.

And Demba Ba suffers from the odd knee injury himself. Therefore, if either of these where to get injured the players to step in are not up to the same standard which could turn this seasons hard work on its head.
