Manchester United are on the verge of signing Benfica centre-back Esquiel Garay report Marca.
The centre-back has been in sensational form for Benfica this season and has caught the eye of Sir Alex Ferguson after his starring display in the Champions League 0-0 draw away to Barcelona.
Benfica are adamant that Garay is worth £28m but United have only bid around £13m with negotiations due to last until June. Real Madrid would be eligible for 50% for any fee that is made between the two clubs which could hinder any deal. Ferguson is keen to replace Rio Ferdinand at the end of the season after 11 years at United and Garay would step straight into the England international’s shoes at the club.
Garay is a towering presence at centre-back; his 6 ft 4 in frame kept Manchester City and Barcelona at bay in the Champions and Europa League in 2011 and 2012.
The 26 year-old Argentinian played for Real Madrid between 2008-2011 where he made just 25 appearances. He was loaned out to Racing Santander in his first season and eventually signed for Benfica in a £6.5m fee in July 2011.
