The Fifa World Footballer of the Year has been named as Lionel Messi, the Argentine and Barcelona striker, fending off last year’s winner the former Man U star Cristiano Ronaldo.

The 22-year-old became the first Argentine to win the award since it began in 1991.

After beating Ronaldo to the Ballon D’Or, he comfortably beat last year’s winner to the World title, in a vote by captains and head coaches of women’s and men’s national teams.

Messi also beat off stiff competition from Kaka and Barcelona team mates Xavi and Andres Iniesta.

The award signals a stunning year for Messi, whose club side Barca scored their way to a phenomenal six trophies, along with the help of the tip-top Argentine forward.

Barca finished La Liga and Spanish Cup champion, as well as defeating former two-time Champions League winners Manchester United 2-0, with Messi securing their Champions League trophy in Rome in April earlier this year.

The Catalan side then added the European Super Cup, Spanish Super Cup and Club World Cup as they came from behind to beat Estudiantes in Abu Dhabi through Messi’s extra time thriller winner.

However, the Real Madrid wizard Ronaldo, did win the Fifa Puskas award for the best goal of the year for his 40-yard strike for Manchester United against FC Porto in the Champions League quarter finals.

Meanwhile Brazilian Marta scooped the female World Player of the Year title for the fourth year running, beating England striker Kelly Smith. England’s 31-year-old Smith helped England to the Euro 2009 final where they were hammered 6 – 2 against Germany back in September. Germany had won the title seven times, dating back to 1995.
