Jose Mourinho is targeting a big transfer deal for Real Madrid as he attempts to lure Chelsea goalkeeper Petr Cech to the Bernabeu.
The Real Madrid boss sees Cech as a perfect replacement for unsettled goalkeeper Iker Casillas. It is believed a bid of around £28m would lure the 30-year-old away from West London.
Despite his recent contract signing in May last year, the Czech Republic international has refused to rule out a move away from the club. He spoke to the Evening Standard in May and said:
“If I would like to try something new, then it would have to be a club of a similar level to Chelsea.
“You never know, everything happens fast in the football life. You can sign a 10-year contract with a club and then end up leaving after three years.
“I believe that there is still time for a possible change.”
Jose Mourinho’s falling-out with captain Iker Casillas has been very public as he dropped the Real Madrid goalkeeper once again for the 4-3 victory against Real Sociedad. Reserve keeper Antonio Adan has been preferred for the last two matches and Mourinho has not signaled that he is ready to reestablish Casillas as his number 1 again. However, the 6th minute sending off of Adan forced Mourinho to play Casillas in a pulsating match.
Mourinho knows Cech from his days as Chelsea manager when he won two Premier League titles and one FA cup and would be keen to work with him again.
Chelsea have a ready-made replacement in 20-year-old Thibault Courtois who won the Europa League last season and has been in superb form for Atletico Madrid this season. The 1.99m Belgian shot-stopper is currently on loan at the club but could be recalled for the remainder of the calender year.
Ex Chelsea boss Roberto Di Matteo heaped praise on Courtois before he came face to face with Petr Cech at the UEFA Super Cup which Atletico won 4-1. Di Matteo said:
“(Courtois) is a top, top goalkeeper. He has all the ability and the potential to become the future of Chelsea.”
Meanwhile, Chelsea are set to announce a U-turn on the future of Frank Lampard as they offer him a contract extension at the club. It is believed that Lampard would be offered a year’s extension that would see him at the club until the end of next season. He is now just 10 goals shy of overhauling Bobby Tambling’s club record of 202 – a mark he is desperate to overtake.
Will Cech make the switch to the Bernabeu in January?
