Power Ranger……..No More

Anyone who knows me will tell you that Nile Ranger fits more than one category for me liking a football player; his criminal past, appearance of a west coast rapper and general behaviour is something that I am generally fond of. But after the recent spout of charges and behaviour problems I now find this kid intolerable.

I was “lucky” enough to meet Nile last year and he was generally a nice lad and we chatted a little. I thought that he must have turned over a new leaf, how I was wrong.

Nile Ranger has faced magistrates twice in two days after being charged with assault after an alleged attack that left a man unconscious and thinking he had a broken jaw.

This is the third time this month the youngster has faced the courts following previous charges of drink driving (after partying with Mario Balotelli), violence and being drunk and disorderly.

Though London born Ranger has yet to enter a plea to any of the charges, but the outcomes do not look great.

A spokesman for Northumbria Police said: ”Following an assault outside Cosy Joe’s pub in the Bigg Market, Newcastle, on Saturday August 27 police have today charged Nile Ranger, 20, of Forest Hall, with two counts of common assault and two counts of assault causing actual bodily harm.

”He has been bailed to appear at Newcastle Magistrates’ Court on Friday November 18.”

Police questioned the striker for more than four hours on Sunday after he was arrested in the early hours of the morning in Newcastle’s Cathedral Square, which is where the main job centre is for the city. This is a place Ranger is going to have to get accompanied with as Newcastle are refusing to renew his contract, leaving him to find another club. I am sure now that people behind the closed doors are happy they gave him a five and a half year contract that will, keep him at the club till 2016.

Though this is not the first time Mr. Ranger has been in trouble as in May this year was caught posing with a replica gun. This is déjà vu to his past when he was caught up in armed robbery in Muswell Hill in London.

“I started running with a gang. We were convicted of street robbery in Muswell Hill. There was a weapon but we didn’t use it.

“Jail was pretty rough but it taught me a lot. The most important thing I learned is that I never want to go back.”

Well if this statement is true that he doesn’t want to go back to jail, then he has a funny way of showing that he wants to change.

However, Nile Ranger shows promise and that is what is so frustrating about his attitude towards football. He impressed hugely at reserves level when in 2008 he finished with fifteen goals at the under 18’s and seven for the Newcastle reserves in his first season. This resulted in him picking up the “Wor Jackie Milburn Trophy” in 2009 and lead to a contact extension by no other than Newcastle God Alan Shearer. Now Shearer must of seen something to award a three and a half year deal.

He has impressed in big games, such as the 4-3 win at Stamford Bridge, where he scored the equaliser and also made a notable performance in the 1-0 win at the Emirates.

He has even had a call up for the England under 19’s but even with all of this promise he just cannot resist his former lifestyle, and in a world where footballers are also role models something has to give and unfortunately it is Rangers career.

Another one like Andy Carroll who get caught up in the haze that is, Newcastle night life and can’t handle a few pints with the lads. Sell him to blackpool or b’ham, i’m sure both were at one point interested in him…
