Rare defeat for Inter

By Glezos Alberganti, La Settimana Sportiva

Though Inter’s defeat at Napoli might seem unexpected to some, facts look
very different. Mourinho’s boys went to Naples tired after last wednesday’s
Coppa Italia semifinal (which Inter won 1-0, but it was Sampdoria who
reached the final thanks to their astounding 3-0 win in the first leg). The
result was a very poor game for both teams, and when everything was set for
a boring 0-0 draw, Marcelo Zalayeta scored an unexpected winner for the
Azzurri. “No problem”, said Mou after the game,”we have to take 9 points from
the remaining 5 games to retain the title. We have three home games at our
disposal, so no doubts at all: we’ll win”.

After today’s win over a disappointing Palermo side (3-0), Milan jumped to
second place, 7 points behind Inter. Manager Carlo Ancelotti doesn’t believe
they have a chance for the title: “It’s too late, we threw away too many points
this year”. On their part, Juventus came near to lose after struggling
Reggina: Cristiano Zanetti scored a late equalizer for Juve (2-2) which
didn’t stop rumours and controversy. Manager Claudio Ranieri looks ready to
leave the club, and after the defeat last Wednesday in the Cup semi against
Lazio the atmosphere between the team and the supporters is getting more and
more tense. Juventus are now third, with a 9-point gap from Inter.

Torino and Bologna won important games. Among the teams fighting to avoid
relegation, Lecce and Reggina look likely to go down. And after a couple of
vital wins in the last month, Chievo lost at home against Udinese, and now
the second team of Verona is back in the danger zone.
