Own goal seals another Inter win

By Glezos Alberganti, La Settimana Sportiva

In the eyes of Italian media, Serie A’s 30th ‘giornata’ sealed the season in favour of Inter Milan, after week-long speculations about the hard time the Nerazzurri were supposed to face yesterday night, in the crucial away game against Udinese. Facts proved them wrong, as Inter walked away again with three points, courtesy of a disgraceful own goal by Udinese’s defender Isla.

In the afternoon, second placed Juventus had what looked as an easy home game against struggling Chievo Verona. A sensational hat trick by Veronese forward Pellissier produced a surprise result, and the 3-3 draw which ensued could mark the end of Juve’s title aspirations. Now Mourinho’s men are leading the league table 9 points clear over the Bianconeri, with 8 games to go. The next turn could be very important, with Inter playing at home against Palermo while Juventus will travel to Liguria for a showdown with Champions League candidates Genoa. If Inter would increase their advantage up to 11-12 points next weekend, the clash between Mourinho and Ranieri scheduled for April 18th could prove much less vital.

AC Milan struggled to reinforce their Champions League aspirations, with a 2-0 win over Lecce. Both goals came in injury time, and David Beckham was left on the bench fo the whole game by coach Carlo Ancelotti. In the relegation zone, Reggina and Torino lost again, and along with Lecce look the main candidates to go down.
