Is Abou Diaby, an enigma, or just plain unlucky?

It’s the news that all Arsenal fans were dreading, after nine long years, midfielder Abou Diaby has been released.

The Frenchman joined the Gunners from Auxerre in 2006, but a succession of serious injuries limited his appearances to just 182. One must feel an element of sympathy for the lad, after all, it’s not his fault he spent 90% of his Arsenal career on the treatment table.

However, there were a few highlights, dubbed the new Patrick Viera he inspired the Gunners to a memorable 5-2 thrashing of Fenerbahce in Istanbul. He was then dubbed the new Yaya Toure after he inspired Arsenal to a stunning 2-0 victory at Anfield in 2012. Unfortunately, as with many performances before, it was a false dawn.

The club released a statement saying “Arsenal would like to take this opportunity to thank Abou, for his contribution to the club wish him well for the future.”

So what next for the Enigma that is Abou Diaby? Will he play again? Or his he, quite simply, one of the unluckiest professional footballers in Premier League history?

If you are going to be injured for that length of time the wages he was picking up must have soften that blow somewhat. So to call him unlucky whilst he lives a luxurious lifestyle grates a little. Obviously it’s a shame his best years are behind him but someone should take a punt, ‘if’ the big if, he’s over his injuries…he’s maybe worth one last gamble. A pay as you play type of contract, he could do a job for any team and at least keep a club physio busy at any rate!
