Tottenham are set to sign Sampdoria defensive midfielder Pedro Obiang, beating the likes of Napoli and Manchester City.

The highly-rated 20 year-old has been in fine form this season in Serie A, with his tough tackling and mature displays gaining flattering comparisons with Michael Essien and Nigel De Jong from football pundits and fans.

According to reports in Italy, Obiang would be available for around £5.5m and he would welcome a move to the Premier League. Obiang’s agent Jose Miguel Gonzalez has added fuel to the fire by saying: “We know that several Italian, English and Spanish clubs are following him. We are excited about the interest of other clubs, there are many rumours.”

Andre-Villas-Boas is keen to keep midfield talisman Scott Parker as fresh as possible and Obiang’s arrival would add strength in depth to the Spurs midfield. The defensive midfielder, who has dual nationality with Spain and Gabon, has come up through the ranks with Athletic Madrid with the likes of David De Gea and Fernando Torres and has represented Spain at U-19 level.

According to the Daily Mail, the Spanish midfielder has been chased by Spurs for the last three years and the North London club feel that the time is right to sign the midfield protege. It is thought he would provide a perfect accompaniment to Moussa Dembele as he has impressed alongside creative playmaker Andrea Poli in the Sampdoria midfield for two seasons.
