Schalke head coach, Huub Stevens, has made Rafael van der Vaart and Salomon Kalou his top targets, this summer.

Stevens managed Tottenham Hotspur playmaker, Van der Vaart,  at Hamburg, and  he has expressed a desire to work with the Netherlands international again. The Dutchman has delighted fans of live football at White Hart Lane, this year.

Van der Vaart’s agent, Robert Geerlings, recently confirmed Schalke’s interest in his client, and the former Hamburg star has hinted he would welcome a move back to Germany.

“His qualities are unprecedented. I would love to work with him again”, Stevens said. “There are rumours circulating that Rafael would return to Germany. But I have not heard from his mouth. I have not spoken with him and we’ll have to see after Euro 2012.

“If Rafa really wants it, he is welcome. If that opportunity arises, and he looks forward to it, let him come.”

The Schalke chief is also interested in taking out-of-contract Chelsea forward, Kalou, to Gelsenkirchen. However, he is expecting a battle for the Ivorian’s signature.

“Kalou is a Bosman player, this summer. It’s obvious; there are many other clubs keen on him – Liverpool, for example. But I know for sure he wants to move away from England. This could be our chance!” Stevens added.

Schalke can offer the star duo Champions League football, next term – an essential bargaining chip at the top level.

Tottenham’s failure to secure a seat at Europe’s top table, despite finishing fourth in the Premier League, could see them lose their prized assets, including the likes of Gareth Bale and Schalke target, Van der Vaart.

The Bundesliga outfit appear to be among the frontrunners for the 29-year-old’s signature in the soccer betting, as they look to make a real impact at home and abroad in 2012-2013.

Kalou is a terrible player, but not bad as an impact sub for free I guess
