Germany 4
Australia 0

Germany strolled to victory over ten man Australia to instill ominous fear to the rest of the world. A thundering strike by Lukas Podolski after ten minutes, flew past Mark Schwarzer who didn’t have a prayer stopping the powerful drive that went right through his laces. A kid that’s tipped as one to watch- Mesut Ozil played a blinder in midfield; linking up midfield and attack with effortless ease. His outrageous dive earned him a yellow card but it didn’t spoil a (surprise surprise) highly efficient German performance coupled with some welcome flair. I predict betting on Germany to win the World Cup will go up at least four- fold after this stonking performance. Joe Cole should fill a ‘Ozil shaped hole’ for England if Mr Capello decides to start him in the reminder of the tournament.

Polish born Miroslav Klose carved a great chance for himself after the 19th minute but his shot was completely wayward. Another chance went begging for the World Cup predator soon after, but he got his reward when he headed in a Philip Lahm cross after a rare mistake from Fulham’s Mark Schwarzer. Lots of space was opening up for Germany through the middle and down the flanks as Lucas Neill’s defense struggled with the Germans’ expressive football. Philip Lahm was having another excellently consistent game down the right hand side, causing more than enough trouble for the Aussie defense.

Australia were well and truly beaten when talisman Tim Cahill was shown a straight red card after lunging in on Bastian Schwiensteiger, who’s quickness evaded the Everton man. The straight red was thoroughly harsh, and made the contest even more one-sided than it had been prior to Cahill’s dismissal.

Young kid Thomas Muller added a third as his beautifully placed shot went through Neill’s legs and evaded Schwarzer’s desperate grasp, bouncing in off the left hand post.

And Brazilian born Cacau tucked in with 20 minutes left to play; completing the rout after being on the pitch for just 1 minute 52 seconds.

It leaves Australia with a mountain to climb and (whisper it) a hint of sympathy from England fans.

Just pray we don’t get Germany in this kind of form: or we’re out.

Poor old Tim, I said he would have to be the main for the Ozzies in my previews but the boys from down-under haven’t got a prayer without him. They were hardly putting the German back-line to the sword. This made it easy for the Germany to press forward and pretty much play about taking advantage of the extra man. They looked slick and their own Ozzy looked in fine form, but Ze Germanz will face better teams than this.

Playing Craig Moore at centre back is not going to help you to win a world Cup game! The blokes available on a free after being sold by newscastle about 5 years ago! Surely the Aussies have got better defenders than Morrey?!
