Czech Republic V Portugal

According to my high-ranking Czech source Mirka (bird of my mate Matt), coach Michal Bilek is getting a bit of slating on the forums but he’s still managed to do the business and drag them into the quarters. It didn’t look to cosy for them when they where pretty much caned by the classy Russians who I had down as semi material after I watched the highlights.

Pilar has impressed and that cavemanesque Jiracek has chipped in with a couple too which is a good job because former golden boot winner Baros looks well past it, Pilar especially will be looking to get forward at the top of the midfield with gung ho Limbersky and Salassie overlapping on the flanks. Defensively they struggle though, as we saw, when attacked they can be pulled apart and they will have to be on top organisational form along with my diamond Kadlec when faced with Portugal’s front line. Cech is all in all a great keeper but has been hit and miss and will be tested to the hilt at the Warsaw National Stadium. Talking of miss, Captain Rosicky is facing a race to be fit for the tie on Thursday night and without him prodding the leather about will be more bad news for The Republic.

Like the Czechs, Portugal lost their first game at the hands of Germany but have steadily improved throughout the group stages and look a good bet to reach the semis. Ronaldo has finally found some form after being pretty plain in previous tournaments. His display in their final game against Holland was truly world class and as I said in the group previews, if he turns up, he can win the Cup for Portugal on his own. Nani has impressed as predicted and so has Postiga, despite having a so-so season and Pepe somehow managed to stay on the pitch for all the games, even chipping in with a goal. The thing I grudgingly like about the team is the togetherness, they really seem to want it this time, especially after coming so close 8 years ago and then falling at the final hurdle. They came back after Denmark levelled 2-2 and overcame the early Dutch goal to come out 2-1 winners thanks to CR7, my diamond (bit obvious really). I can see him having another blinder tearing apart poor Salassie who will be trying to cope with the daunting Portugal left side. I can only see one result and it will be Czech out time in Warsaw.
