The Ultimate 11’s – England’s Pony 11

by Mystical Mike

Monday, August 3rd, 2009

The week’s Ultimate 11’s is Bobby Richards’ England Pony 11. Bobby once scored 2 goals in Hastings as a 20 year old playing for an under 12’s side, and was ever present when his Sunday League side took a 12-0, 8-0, and 14-0 battering. So who better quailified to give us his Ultimate England Pony 11!

Do you really know your clubs proud history or are you just a teenage glory hunter? (not mentioning any names from the Kings Road). Remember you must pick a decent 11, not 10 forwards and a goalie. We’ll have a butchers and I’ll give my verdict from Mustard to Pony. E-mail your team to

ha ha ha ha ha ha!!!!

    wot a team!!!!!

  • Darren

That is worse than the charlton 11, wot a team!

  • dexylongshot

Might have to upgrade Sinton purely for gnome-like head value.

  • Iain

Awesome. I love this sort of selection. Some first class clangers in that line up. A couple of personal favourites that aren’t included are Michael Ricketts and Gavin McCann.

Did you know that England’s two most prolific strikers (goals per minute) are David Nugent and Francis Jeffers? How they aren’t leading us to World Cup 2010 I’ll never know.

  • Chris D

A little harsh on Andy Gray. His first touch in an England shirt was to punt it out for a throw – under Graham Taylor’s instructions – Taylor’s theory was that it would give England an immediate numerical advantage over Poland. Genius.

We seem to be forgetting Colin Cooper, Tony Daley, Tim Sherwood, John Fashanu (a legend but no Romario), Chris Powell (really Sven?), David Hirst (we needed a striker for a summer tour to Australia) and Keith Curle, as a right back of all things.

Worryingly Graham Taylor was in charge for most of these selections…..

  • Darren

Nugent must have the best record of all time, touched the ball once and scored! As for franny, what a player he is!

  • Matt Quinn

Ha! Terrible team.. although i do remember David White smashing 4 past Villa at Villa Park. I was there. One of the most depressing games ive ever seen.

Ps. I actually always quite rated Carlton Palmer… maybe not international class, but i thought he was decent! Mind you, i currently love Clint Dempsey and Jason Koumas… so what do i know?

  • Stevie

Clint Dempsey is quite expensive in the Telegraph Fantasy league. Think he was in the top 5 point scorers last season. Koumas is class but never quite delivers.

  • Jay29ers

Rob Jones?! Come on! He was top quality. Such a pity he had to retire so young. I’d have him as a left or right back (in a four-four-two. I never rated him as a wing-back) ahead of Glen Johnson, Insúa, Fábio Aurélio or whoever else we’ll play there next season.

  • Tef1on

This team must be dire if Darren Bent & David James aren’t in it

  • Darren

to be fair Jay29, Dexy did give him 1 pony and not minus pony like the others.

Typical Quinn to disagree, Palmer was double pony! I remember Graham Taylor telling him he was the playmaker and to play it along the ground then hit it long to Les in the same sentence, Graham Taylor, lovely man, but jez, what a crap manager. What ever happened to Phil Neal by the way, he was even worse.

  • James Webb

To be fair Steve Hodge was far better than some of the dross who have pulled on an england shirt

  • James Webb

It was hard coming up with a worst XI but I think I can just about say ive managed it lol

    Dave Beassant
    Earl Barrett
    Andy Hinchcliffe
    Steve Foster
    Antony Gardner
    Barry Venison
    Tony Daley
    Seth Johnson
    Steve Guppy
    Brian Deane
    Michael Ricketts

    Stuart Ripley
    Gavin McCann
    David White

  • Darren

Did Seth Johnson play for England? Now he was pony!

  • James Webb

Yep one game under Sven I think !!!

  • dexylongshot

Barry Venison, whatever happened to him?

  • Ash

    Andy Sinton! Tut Tut
