Ultimate 11’s – Barcelona

The week’s Ultimate 11’s is total Mustard! It’s our first all Mustard line up. Matt Quinn gives us his beloved Barcelona 11, and what a team. Just look at that bench!

Do you really know your clubs proud history or are you just a teenage glory hunter? (not mentioning any names from the Kings Road). Remember you must pick a decent 11, not 10 forwards and a goalie. We’ll have a butchers and I’ll give my verdict from Mustard to Pony. E-mail your team to Dexy@ukfootballfinder.co.uk

is that quite possibly the greatest team of all time?

  • Ash

I was thinking the same thing, could any other club compete with that greatest XI?

  • Iain

Wow. and then you think of all the incredible players who aren’t there! Gheorghe Hagi, Luis Enrique, Luis Figo, there are so many of them I’d struggle to come up with my favourite squad of 22.

This comes fairly close to perfection, even though there are only three defenders!

  • Matt Quinn

Who needs defenders? Another defender and Maradona would have been axed from the entire squad!

  • James

Maradona on the bench, no Hagi doesn’t make the squad, some team, no place for Xavi or incesta? First team in Spain to do the treble, surely one of those deserves to be in that team

They are all overrated, HA HA!!!!

What an amazing team, someone should do a Madrid XI.

  • Patrick

That is an awesome line-up. Three defenders is slightly suspect but it’s hard to pick holes in a team that can only accomodate Maradona on the bench. I’d have to somehow try to find room in there for Iniesta. After all the man has just been (in my opinion) their best player in a treble winning season. And what would Xavi be like without him? Like bacon without out eggs or Hale without Pace I reckon. Also maybe you could switch Laudrup for Luis Enrique. I have him snarling in there alongside Guardiola. But then I’d have to get rid of someone else. Arrghh! This is too difficult. Plus I’d want Stoickov staring if possible. He’d bitchslap any defence from any era.

  • James

like the Chuckle Brothers without each other! Ha Ha!

Iniesta is without doubt the best player in the world at the moment, all the so called experts say you need a Roy Keane, Patrick Veira (at his best) type of player in midfield, which is nonsense of course, Iniesta plays like a conductor of beautiful music, the rest of the team are like the different sections of his orchestra!

  • Matt Quinn

Iniesta is brilliant and i love him…. but he hasnt been their best player this season. He was injured for about 75% of the season.

I think it was Cruyff that said that Laudrup at Barcelona was the best player he had ever had the pleasure of watching- and that he wished that he was able to play to that level.

It did take a lot of effort to leave Stoichkov on the bench. Ive still got my old Barca shirt with his name on the back.

Maradona on ability alone would obviously make the first XI- but he didnt actually have that much success at Barca and was dogged by injuries/controversy.

  • Matt Quinn

Ok…. now over a year ago (on this website), i said Iniesta was in top 3 players in the world. Everyone said i was mad… and then Spain won the Euro championships.

I still think he is in top 3- but he has been injured for most of the season… and ask any Barca fan/press who Barca rely on most- is Lionel Messi.

They have a thing called “Messi-dependencia” in Spain… as Barca couldnt win without him on the pitch. Even with everyone else playing.

So, while i still rate Iniesta as 2nd/3rd best in the world- you cant compare him with Messi, yet.

  • Iain

I agree with Matt (I think) on Iniesta. If we were to reconsider this list in 5 years, then he would probably make the grade (assuming he maintains his high standards and gets better).

At the moment he has a lot of good press and rightly so. He’s a class act. But by similar principles, Adebayor would have made the Arsenal all time XI at the end of last year. Would he make that list a the end of this season? Emphatically no.

I’m glad Xavi is in there too. So often the forgotten man of Barcelona in the early part of the century. Second most appearances ever for Barcelona – not bad going.

Xavi and Iniesta should be up there with Dempsey & Makepeace, Eric & Ernie, Pie & Mash. They are both brilliant, didn’t Xavi get best Player of the Euros in one of the awards. I think Senna got one as well. Maybe one was the Uefa version and one Fifa, whatever, lil Xavi is a 1 club Barca legend and I think it’s highly unlikely Iniesta is gonna want away for a few years yet. Imagine how good they wiill be in a season or twos time with Messi breaking out of his nappies.

Adebayor…………no. Put him in a team like Sunderland and he’ll do no better than big Kenny Jones. Get shot Arsene.

  • dexylongshot

PS where’s Archibald, Spinaker and Hughes!

  • Darren

Patrick Kluivert was class at Barca, he’s certainly a forgotten man!

ps: can’t wait to see the Real Madrid 11!!

  • Tef1on

What a team! I do feel Luis ENrique needs to have a mention though… as people say, possibaly the greatest team of all time… and thats with 5* players players left out!

  • Tom Moore

  • dexylongshot

Neeskens, he really was king of the Longshots!!! Enrique is a ringer for my mate Camp Fordy! He was fantastic at the turn of the millenium! Maybe we should do a b-team???
