Weekly review – Who says Man United are a one man team?

As usual we’ve got a mixed bag this week, in Europe’s top competition both Man United and Arsenal fell at the third to last fence, however, Fulham’s fairy tale season continues by overcoming the odds to beat German champion’s Wolfsburg. Liverpool also progressed by emphatically dispatching Everton’s conquerors; Benfica. This said, Liverpool’s push for fourth stumbled yet again after a stalemate with the only other English club left in Europe left them with a mountain to climb.

One of the other contenders for that money cow fourth spot destroyed a normally resolute Birmingham back line, however the other didn’t fare so well as Pompey finished like Tony McCoy and raced away from Spurs in the final straight, leaving Avram Grant and Portsmouth with the chance to win the cup and get relegated in the same season, as West Ham’s win confirmed the inevitable on Saturday. Grant has the unenviable task of choosing who to play for the final, with many of his squad set to receive huge bonuses if they play one more game, hopefully the players will see sense and cancel these agreements, and it would be a travesty if they didn’t. Viewers may have been forgiven for thinking they had switched on Dancing On Ice, as countless players were felled by the ridiculous Wembley surface. I don’t want to sound like a broken record, but £900million and you can’t even lay a decent pitch? Why not pop over the Emirates and check out the grass there? Surely it can’t be that difficult to make a pitch that doesn’t cut up within five minutes of kick off.

Ironically, Barcelona didn’t play as well as they had done in the first leg at the Camp Nou, however one magical Argentinean made all the difference, as Arsenal’s defence couldn’t cope with the speed and explosive finishing of the little genius. I’m not going to join the bandwagon of pundits showering the little Argentinean with superlatives (I could have sworn the commentator during El Classico got a semi every time the little wizard went near the ball) but he was the difference between Arsenal and Barca on the night. I’m certain with a full team, Arsenal would have put up much more resistance, and possibly caused a huge upset, but as is the case with football, if means little.

United on the other hand succumbed to the team that Wolfsburg beat to win the German crown, leaving Sir Alex revealing his inner Basil Fawlty… typical Scotsman. Thankfully no-one pointed out to him that the main protesters were French, Dutch and Brazilian. Without Wayne Rooney, United failed to breech a Blackburn team that have only lost two at home who more than deserved their point. Big Sam has now managed to turn Blackburn into the new Bolton, and it can’t be denied, he is good at what he does. It’s not big, its not clever, but its effective, his teams take a no-nonsense approach to defending and are very hard to breakdown.

The big winners over the last week have to be Chelsea. After more abysmal decisions went for Chelsea they overturned a spirited Villa side that didn’t deserve to lose by three goals. And if they win their game on hand against Bolton they will move four points clear, with just four games left.

they won one trophy this season and even that was thanks to Wayne Rooney!

31 million for Berbatov, he is ‘avin a laugh? Selling Tevez was a massive mistake, 28 goals for City, say no more!

Tevez v Berbatov was a hot topic at the start of the season on here, with many tipping the sulking bulgy to be the main man, i was firmly behind the so called work-horse Tevez for obvious reasons. The man is god-like!!!

They should of kept Tevez or offered him a good extension but hey the guy wanted to leave. He became well known with Man United who grants nearly every player a great status once they have joined, but cant blame Berbatov, his still progressing with United and still give him a chance he will get better and better =) . Just look at other players, Nani, Cristiano Ronaldo who everyone thought he was a dud when Fergie first bought him, just dont write off players in United just yet i know they will progress and become dominant once again =) . Just takes a bit of time to refuel and become better. I hope David Silva, David Villa and Karim Benzema end up with United, that would be gun if they all did =) .
